Tips On How To Save On Heating Bills With Oil-Fired Burners
Energy and heating bills seem to continue to rise. Here is a tip I have learned that will reduce your oil or gas energy consumption. Your domestic hot water is heated by either your boiler, which has an internal coil, or from a separate water heater which is either oil, gas, or electric. Most boilers must maintain an internal temperature to heat the home properly. This internal boiler temperature is set at a minimum temperature of about 170 degrees.
If you have a boiler with a coil, you can reduce this internal temperature in the warmer months. This is done from a dial-setting on the boiler. Since you do not need heat in the summer, by reducing the internal temperature of the boiler to say, 120 degrees, you will reduce your energy consumption. When you turn on the hot water in your sink or tub, there is no need to have scolding water coming out. It could also burn your hands if your not careful. In the colder months when you need heat, the boiler must maintain the higher temperature to heat the water in your baseboards and also heat your hot water.
If you do not know how to adjust the setting on your boiler, check with your heating company. The setting should be changed back to the higher temperature for the heating season. If you forget to raise it, the boiler won't produce enough to heat your home.
If you have a separate water heater, check the temperature dial and adjust it if it is unnecessarily high. For most households, your hot water heater should not be set more than around 120 degrees. Some people even set it lower if they really want to save.
